Thanks to many generous RMH Foundation donors and funding support from Sentara Cares, a project long in the making came to fruition to provide a warm and safe place to heal for patients experiencing homelessness in our community.
The Safe & Secure Homeless Respite program, in partnership with Strength In Peers, opened this summer 2024 right on our hospital campus at Sentara RMH.
No longer dropped-off via taxi on the streets, these individuals are provided temporary shelter, health education, and supportive services following an inpatient discharge.
This place is more than a temporary home - it's a safe space that allows these individuals to meet their physical, social, and emotional health needs.
Watch the video above and hear from Strength In Peers participant Cindy Mays, who says she gained her willpower back after overcoming the loss of her mother, aunt, and home - and an acute illness.
