“Supportive care makes excellent cancer care possible … [it] is the prevention and management of the adverse effects of cancer and its treatment. This includes management of physical and psychological symptoms and side effects across the continuum of the cancer journey from diagnosis through treatment to post-treatment care.”
– Multinational Association of Supportive Care in Cancer
Patients and caretakers work to survive a serious, life-threatening disease … a multifaceted battle managing physical and psychological symptoms and side effects across the continuum of the cancer journey from diagnosis through treatment to post-treatment care.
Clinicians mitigate the moral distress that comes with the responsibility of meeting the needs of new and existing cancer patients and their support networks.
Modern oncology practice clearly calls for a new and better paradigm - a design for care that treats the person and not just the disease. Supportive care is that new paradigm.
It provides open access to resources that allow patients to live better and improve their quality of life while battling the disease...… to thrive with cancer, not just survive.
Who doesn’t want the best outcomes for cancer journeys?

Did You Know?
- Mortality rates for cancer in our community outpace the state mortality rates.
- Cancer is one of the top two leading causes of death in the Shenandoah Valley.
- The cancer incidence rate in the Friendly City is higher than the state average.
Despite a long-standing challenge with high cancer rates and mortality, there is reason for optimism. Recent data indicates positive changes in the Shenandoah Valley, with reduced cases and lower mortality rates for the most common types of cancer. This progress reflects the positive influence of philanthropy. Generous donors have supported our community by providing essential tools such as a new linear accelerator and expanding the capacity of the Hahn Cancer Center. Additionally, donations have directly assisted patients through the RMH Foundation’s Hope Fund, ensuring that every patient receives necessary resources. These initiatives, made possible by donations, are truly making a difference.
Since Twila Showalter’s passing in December 2017, The Showalter Family established the Twila & Larry Showalter Cancer Fund at The Harrisonburg Community Foundation in celebration of her life. Over time, the family has hosted several events including an inaugural Fourth of July BBQ Fundraiser, a basketball tournament, and golf tournament. Since 2018, the fund has raised and donated over $100,000. All proceeds of these events benefited families here in the Shenandoah Valley through the Hope Fund.
Now, their generosity ensures that our patients receive not just medical treatment but compassionate, comprehensive care that extends throughout their journey and beyond through the Twila Showalter Supportive Care Clinic. Their foundational gift will profoundly impact countless lives, embodying the true spirit of community and care.
